NEW • Distribution Release: PC/OS 2009 |
| Roberto Dohnert has announced the release of PC/OS 2009, a user-friendly desktop distribution based on Xubuntu: "Today we are happy to announce the newest release of PC/OS. The new release follows PC/OS OpenCore 1.0. PC/OS OpenDesktop 2009 and PC/OS OpenWorkstation 2009 have been fully tested and are ready for broad consumer adoption. This release updates the PC/OS 2008 line of products. Some of the changes include a newly laid-out user interface and updated packages, and all important security updates applied. Some of the updated packages are as follows: Firefox 3.0, AbiWord 2.6.4, GIMP 2.6, Pidgin 2.5, Skype 2.0, VLC 0.9.5, OpenOffice.org 3.0, Eclipse, Qt Designer, Songbird 0.7, Wammu, Mobile Phone Manager, TrueCrypt." NEW • Distribution Release: Yellow Dog Linux 6.1 |
| Fixstars, a company that has recently acquired Terra Soft Solutions, has announced the release of Yellow Dog Linux 6.1: "Fixstars today released Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) 6.1 for Apple G4/G5, Sony PlayStation 3, PowerStation, and IBM Power Systems. Built upon the CentOS foundation, a derivative of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, YDL 6.1 offers several end-user and development tool improvements. For end users, YDL 6.1 offers an updated Firefox and OpenOffice.org, a vastly improved graphical wireless configuration tool, and the introduction of ps3vram functionality which enables use of PS3 video RAM for temporary storage or swap. | Mehdi Magnon has announced the release of Ubuntu Muslim Edition 8.10, an Ubuntu-based distribution incorporating a variety of Islamic software, such as prayer times, a Quran study tool and a web content filtering utility: "The Ubuntu Muslim Edition team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu ME 8.10. NEW • Distribution Release: Mandriva One 2009 "Xfce" |
| Mandriva has announced the release of Mandriva One 2009, Xfce edition, an unofficial live CD featuring the Xfce desktop: "The Mandriva community is proud to offer another Xfce edition to the users. This edition is not a Mandriva product (so do not expect any kind of support directly from Mandriva), but has been completed with a great cooperation between the company and the community. We tried our best to provide the best experience possible using Xfce Live but so far some issues still stand. We do not consider those issues blocking, but we'd rather mention them here so you know what to do in case you encounter those problems. This edition contains bug fixes as available on the mirrors on 23 October, which should solve some installations and usage issues." | Alexey Sokolov has announced the availability of the second release candidate for TrueBSD 2.0, a general-purpose FreeBSD-based live DVD. What's new? "Updated system environment and kernel to FreeBSD 7.1-PRERELEASE; fixed errors in system installer which were caused by incorrect detection of storage drives; created an official Subversion repository; created a non-official port of x11-wm/ion-3; created an overlay of the ports tree; changed the file system hierarchy; created skel files which are used for each new user; created a ports tree with patched versions of software; created a kernel module snd_hda_hack.ko for additional Intel audio card support; new prompt for the zsh shell; removed all network and audio drivers from the kernel and moved them into separate kernel modules; created nice highlighting for system console and kernel messages; updated all software." NEW • Distribution Release: BlankOn Linux 4.0 |
| BlankOn Linux is a distribution created in cooperation between the Indonesian Linux User Group and the Indonesian Ubuntu community. Its primary goal is to deliver a desktop-oriented Linux distribution with full support for the Indonesian language. The latest version, 4.0 "Meuligoe", is based on the recently released Ubuntu 8.10, with Linux kernel 2.6.27 and GNOME desktop 2.24. Some of the features incorporated in the release include: popular GNOME applications, such as The GIMP, Inkscape and GnuCash are included in the default install; out-of-the-box support for MP3 and other widely-used media codecs, as well as encrypted DVDs; custom theme and artwork. The release is available in three formats: as an installable live CD, as an installation CD, and as a minimal live CD (with AbiWord and Gnumeric replacing OpenOffice.org and Epiphany replacing Firefox). | An unscheduled fifth beta of openSUSE 11.1 was released for testing today: "openSUSE 11.1 beta 5 is now available for immediate download and testing. You may have noticed that we were scheduled to release RC 1 today. However, as Stephan Kulow mentioned on openSUSE-Factory list on Tuesday, we have several blocker bugs and 11 P1 bugs still present. While we're ready to do another release today, we decided that it wasn't ready to be called a release candidate. This shouldn't push back the final release, but it will mean that we will only plan to have one release candidate. Major changes include: more 11.1 branding is now in place; upgrade to PackageKit 0.3.9; KDE4 - NetworkManager and power management plasmoids now available; integration of Smolt finished; Linux kernel updated to 2.6.27.5; KDE 4.1.3...." | Strictly speaking, this is a release candidate for the Debian installer only, but since the release includes a full set of Debian "Lenny" CD and DVD images, it is perfectly suitable for testing the entire distribution. From the announcement: "The Debian Installer team is proud to announce the first release candidate of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux 'Lenny'. | Steven Shiau has announced the release of Clonezilla Live 1.2.1-17, a Debian-based live CD designed for hard disk cloning and partitioning tasks: "Clonezilla live 1.2.1-17 (stable) released. This release is based on Debian 'Lenny' with Linux kernel 2.6.26. Changes: a simplified Chinese interface was added; an option to reboot or shutdown after clone is finished was added; hardware and software information is saved in a Clonezilla image; an option to generate MD5 or SHA1 checksums after an image is saved was added; running on serial console ttyS0 is supported; some more information will be saved in image directory; when restoring an image, image name and target device are chosen first, then advanced parameters; a new option '-z1p' was added to support parallel gzip program (pigz) to compress image for SMP machines; machine product name is shown before restoring image...." | The Elive development team has announced the availability of a new development build of Elive, a Debian-based distribution featuring Enlightenment 17 as its preferred desktop: "The Elive team is proud to announce the release of Elive development version 1.9.15. This version includes better support for MacBooks and a much better network configuration tool. MacBooks - the MacBook support has been overhauled, fixing some bugs like the installation and the webcam support. Wireless and networking - our new application to configure networks called Net-Connector is in a pretty good shape. NEW • Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Beta 5 |
| Warren Woodford has announced that the fifth beta build of SimplyMEPIS 8.0, a desktop distribution based on Debian "Lenny", has been released: "SimplyMEPIS 8.0 beta 5 updates several packages. ISO files of the fifth beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 are available for 32-bit and 64-bit processors. In this release the kernel has been updated to upstream version 2.6.27.5 and the extra drivers have been rebuilt for the new kernel. GRUB has been updated to 0.97. It is hoped that this will resolve the problems a few users have reported with not being able to access a bootable CD. The core of MEPIS is being kept in sync with the upcoming Debian stable release, Lenny.
